Ashley Alder, the chief executive officer of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong and IOSCO vice chair, has been appointed as the new chair of t he International Organization of Securities Commissions during the board’s inaugural meeting at IOSCO’s Annual Conference in Lima.
The board also appointed Jean-Paul Servais, chairman of the Financial Services and Markets Authority of Belgium, to take his place as the new vice chair. Ranjit Ajit Singh, chair of the Securities Commission Malaysia and chair of the IOSCO Growth and Emerging Markets Committee, continues ex oficio as the other IOSCO vice chair.
Alder started his career as a lawyer in London in 1984. He moved to Hong Kong in 1989 with the international law firm Herbert Smith, and practised corporate and business law. He was executive director of Corporate Finance at the SFC from 2001 to 2004, before returning to Herbert Smith, where he became head of the firm’s Asia Region. He rejoined the SFC in 2011.
