Back office outsourcing has been around for many years – at least from the 1970s when global custody emerged. According to Bernstein Research in May 2011, cited in the Bank of New York Mellon Thought Leadership Series in November 2011, the adoption rate of back office outsourcing of custody, investment accounting and transfer agency stands at over 90%. Middle office outsourcing is still much newer. So, according to Bank of New York Mellon estimates, take up of middle office outsourcing of services such as data management; trade processing; position keeping and fund accounting; performance measurement and attribution analysis; client reporting and reconciliations , stands at closer to 20%.
